A form of deep gum cleaning, periodontal scaling treats gum disease at its source by removing plaque, tartar, and bacterial toxins both above and below the gum line. In order to ensure that all disease-causing agents are eliminated, dentists generally clean down to the very bottom of the oral pocket of each tooth.
Periodontal scaling is typically performed after the patient receives a local anesthetic. Sometimes anesthetic is not needed or an anesthetic gel can also be used if needed. The procedure in our office has minimal discomfort to no discomfort for our patients. The gum tissue is curreted during the scaling to remove any granulation(infected or inflamed) tissue to accelerate healing. This entire process allows us to facilitate a very thorough deep cleaning. Our patients report that their mouths feel healthier as quickly as 1 day after the deep scaling. After the procedure, patients are often required to schedule a follow-up visit to ensure the area is healing properly. However, the scaling process may take more than one appointment to complete.
