Cosmetic Dentistry and Inlays and Onlays
What are they and how are they utilized
Inlays and Onlays are Lab fabricated restorations that replace areas between the tooth cusps (Inlays) or replace one or more tooth cusps (Onlay).
The required visits are 2, (1) replaces the tooth, impression and temporize the tooth. (2) Place the restoration, cemented or bonded into place making the tooth very strong and durable. The color of the Inlay/Onlay is matched to the tooth to blend in. Inlays/Onlays are made of different materials depending on the tooth, the position of tooth, the bite pressure on the tooth and the amount of tooth structure needing to be replaced.
Inlay/Onlay materials can be: Compressed heat treated composite, Lithium-disilicate or Zirconia. The experienced Cosmetic Dentist will determine the best most cosmetic material to use for the tooth/teeth to be restored. Inlays/Onlays have a greater long term advantage over filings as long as proper Dental Hygiene is maintained. Inlays/Onlays will usually not need to be replaced for at least 10 years or more.
